  “I can,” he growled. “I want you gone. I want you safe.”

  “Well, it’s too bad that you don’t control me.”

  Her look was hard but Marcus couldn’t help but smile. Every fiber of his being told him that the smart move would be for Angie to leave Charming, if only for a little while. But he was glad she was going to stay. He could do this alone, but he certainly didn’t want to.

  They stood in silence for a few minutes, looking down at the dead bodies.

  “I guess I’d better report this,” he finally said. What are the wolves going to think about this? They’re already on my case for everything else. This could be a real problem.

  Marcus’s ears picked up the sound of an approaching vehicle. Whatever – or whoever – it was, they had turned off of the dirt road and were coming up his gravel driveway.

  Angie obviously did too because she asked, “What is she doing here?”

  Marcus heard the ice in her voice but had no answer.

  Joanna Rivers pulled up next to them and stepped out of her truck. Marcus glanced down at the bodies but there was nothing to be done for them.

  Her eyes wide, she asked, “What happened here? Who are those men?”

  “I don’t know, Jo,” Marcus answered. He saw Angie bristle at his usage of her first name. “They attacked us last night. Nothing you need to worry about.”

  “I wouldn’t be so sure about that,” Joanna answered, walking around and looking down at the bodies.

  “Explain.”

  “My brother is missing.”

  Angie muttered, “Good,” underneath her breath. He knew it was too quiet for Joanna to hear but his ears picked it up.

  “Which one?” he asked.

  “Cory. The youngest.”

  “And you’re sure he’s just not out for the night? Partying? Living life?”

  The look that she shot Marcus was deadly. “I’m sure. Cory just graduated high school. He’s getting ready to go to college.”

  “Sounds like the perfect time to blow off some steam,” Angie offered.

  “Trust me – it’s not like him. If he’s missing, something has happened to him.”

  “Can it wait?” Angie asked, gesturing to the bodies.

  “No,” Joanna shot back. “Marcus, you have to help.”

  “Yeah,” he said, though he certainly didn’t want to. He didn’t know Cory Rivers at all – but he knew that, chances were, Angie was right. He’d just graduated high school, was getting ready to leave Charming and go off to college – it was the perfect time to spend a night out and let loose.

  But he knew his job.

  And these guys certainly aren’t going anywhere.

  “I’ll follow you to your house,” Marcus told Joanna. She nodded at him and climbed back in her truck. Marcus and Angie headed up to the borrowed police car. “I don’t want you to be here alone.”

  “I’ll ride with,” Angie said. She shot him a glare and he knew there was no arguing it. He was going to offer to drop her off somewhere in town while he sorted this mess out – but he didn’t want her out of his sight if he could help it.

  Marcus glanced over at Angie as they rolled down the driveway.

  “So?” he asked. He had a feeling he knew where the conversation was going. “Angie… I don’t want to fight.”

  “This isn’t a fight,” she answered, looking out the window. “You two just seem awfully close.”

  “You’re being ridiculous,” he said, throwing up one of his hands in frustration. “There is nothing between us. You know that. The only woman I care about is you. You know that.”

  She shrugged her shoulders.

  “Angie,” he said. She looked over at him, ashamed at what she had said. “I don’t want her. I want you. There is nothing between Joanna Rivers and me. You know that.”

  “She wants there to be.”

  “She wants to take advantage of me,” he said, following the woman’s truck out onto the dirt road. “There’s a big difference.”

  “I’m sorry,” Angie finally said. “With everything else going on – I know you don’t need this. I shouldn’t act that way, not to you. Not after everything that’s been going on. Not after everything that you’ve gone through. Marcus, I am sorry.”

  “Don’t,” he told her. Marcus reached across the car and squeezed her leg. “It’s all going to be okay. We’ll get to the bottom of this, find out why Cory Rivers is missing – then we’ll get to the bottom of who those men were.”

  “Do you think it’s possible that he was kidnapped? Like me?”

  Marcus shook his head. “What would be the point? He’s young, just graduated school. Why? What’s the motivation?”

  Angie shrugged and said, “I don’t know. But with everything else going on – I think it’s wishful thinking that it’s nothing. I hope I’m wrong.”

  “I hope you are, too,” he told her. They drove in silence for a few minutes until they reached the River’s house. Marcus had never been there, though he had often heard of it. It put his little ranch to shame.

  He pulled up behind Joanna Rivers, who was already getting out of her truck. Marcus and Angie followed suit.

  “Do you mind if I take a look around?” Marcus asked.

  “That’s what you’re here for, isn’t it?” Joanna asked. “Do what you need.”

  Marcus nodded and started walking around the side of the house – though he would hesitate to call it that.

  “Any signs of a break in? A struggle?”

  “He was just missing when I checked for him this morning. And I didn’t hear him come in last night, either.”

  “Which room is his?”

  Joanna pointed towards the back of the house and said, “First floor, corner bedroom.”

  Together, the three of them made their way towards Cory Rivers’ room. Angie kept her distance, watching warily.

  Marcus reached the room that Joanna had indicated and knelt down next to the windows. A quick glance showed him that there appeared to be no sign of a break in – but he took a deep breath and was flooded with the scent of fear and desperation.

  He closed his eyes and knew that the two women had been right – Cory Rivers had been kidnapped.

  “He was kidnapped,” Marcus confirmed.

  “What?” Joanna asked. Her voice held a note of panic. “How do you know?”

  “There’s signs of a break in here,” Marcus lied, waving his hand in the general direction of the window.

  “Should we go inside? Check things out from in there? Maybe there’s something you can find, some hint of what happened, anything.”

  “No need,” Marcus said, turning around and looking out across the vast pastureland. Now that he’d picked up the scent of Cory Rivers, he knew what had happened. Someone had gotten into the house – how, he wasn’t sure – and had dragged the youngest Rivers out his window. His scent of fear and desperation was faint and fading quick, but Marcus knew he’d been dragged out into the pasture. “They took him out there, somewhere.”

  “How do you know?” Joanna repeated.

  “There,” Marcus said, pointing. Barely noticeable were footprints in the dusty soil. Marcus thought he detected a few drag marks – likely Cory Rivers’ feet – but he was unsure.

  “What do we do now?”

  “I need to follow the tracks,” Marcus said. He started to move off, motioning Angie and Joanna to hang back. “You two stay here in case he comes back. He could be out there, dehydrated and disoriented. If I miss him, you need to be here.”

  “The hell with that,” Joanna said. “If you’re going after my brother, I’m going as well.”

  Marcus narrowed his eyes but nodded. “Then we’ll need water.”

  Joanna nodded and walked around the side of the house.

  When she was out of earshot, Marcus said, “You think those two who kidnapped you were the two who attacked us last night?”

  Angie thought for a second and then shook her head. “Not a chance.”

  “That’s my thinking, too,” he told her. He crouched down and ran a finger along the footprints in the dirt. “There were two kidnappers at least. Want to guess who they could be?”

  “I think I know,” Angie told him. “You’re sure, Marcus? That it was a kidnapping?”

  “There’s the stench of fear and desperation everywhere around here,” he said, getting to his feet and nodding towards the vast pastureland. The sun was still behind the clouds but the air was hot and muggy. “They took him out there.”

  “And do you think he’s still out there?”

  “I don’t know,” Marcus admitted. “They could have hauled him off to their truck. Just like they did to you. They could have taken him out there and
questioned him. They could have let him wander off. They could have…”

  “They could have what?”

  Marcus turned back and saw Joanna Rivers walking up to them, carrying a large bottle of water.

  “They could have what?”

  “Killed him,” Marcus said.

  “What? How could that be? Marcus, do you know something about this? Does this have to do with those men at your house?”

  Marcus hesitated. He didn’t want to say too much. Whoever had kidnapped Angie had warned her not to tell a soul – and he wasn’t about to break that now.

  “I was kidnapped, Joanna,” Angie spoke up. Marcus raised an eyebrow but she just nodded at him. “I don’t know who it was – but they asked a lot of questions. About Charming. Mayor Copeland. Marcus. And… You. And your family.”

  “What?” Joanna asked. She usually seemed so in control of herself, especially when faced against the Copelands, but now…

  “I’m getting to the bottom of it,” Marcus growled when Joanna turned an accusatory eye towards him. “We think they might be the same people.”

  “And those bodies at your house?”

  Marcus shrugged and said, “Maybe they work for them. Maybe it’s something completely different. We don’t know. But what I do know is that they took your brother sometime last night. Hauled him through his window and took him out into your pasture. And the trail is running cold. If we don’t act soon, we may never find him.”

  “Okay,” Joanna said. “Okay. Let’s get going.” With that, she headed off.

  “Can you find him, Marcus?” Angie asked.

  He nodded, though he didn’t feel completely sure. The Rivers’ had hundreds of acres of farmland – if the boy’s scent went cold before they were able to find him, or if a rainstorm came up and washed the footprints away…

  Marcus pushed those thoughts from his head.

  “We have to, Marcus,” Angie told him. “Because if we can’t, and he loses his life because I didn’t tell you about the kidnappers sooner… I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forgive myself…”

  The look of shame on Angie’s face was enough to renew Marcus’s focus.

  “We’ll find them,” he told her. “I promise.”
